WORLD HISTORY, CULTURE, AND GEOGRAPHY: THE MODERN WORLD

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
In this course students examine major turning points in the shaping of the modern world, from the late eighteenth century to the present. The year begins with an introduction to current world issues and then continues with a focus on the expansion of the West, and the growing interdependence of people and cultures throughout the world.

UNITED STATES HISTORY AND GEOGRAPHY: CONTINUITY AND CHANGE IN THE TWENTIETH CENTURY

Prerequisite: 10th Grade History

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
In this course students examine major turning points in American History in the twentieth century. Several units will be addressed in which students examine American culture, including religion, literature, art, drama, architecture, education, and the mass media. The first semester links the nation’s beginnings to the 10th grade curriculum in a retrospective of the Enlightenment and the rise of democratic ideas. Next the global spread of industrialism studied in the 10th grade is linked to the industrial transformation in the United States.

PRINCIPLES OF AMERICAN DEMOCRACY

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Students apply knowledge gained in previous years of study to pursue a deeper understanding of the institutions of American government. They will draw on their studies of American history and of other societies to compare different systems of government in the world today. The course is designed to prepare students to vote, to reflect on the responsibilities of citizenship, and to participate in their communities.

ECONOMICS

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
In this course, students will gain understanding of the economic problems and institutions of the nation and the world. Students will apply tools such as graphs, statistics, and equations to their understanding of our economic system. They will learn to make reasoned decisions on economic issues as citizens of this society.
